A. R. Rahman’s work joins composition, performance and production. Born in Chennai, he began working as a keyboard musician while young and later developed advertising music before entering feature films with Mani Ratnam’s Roja.

Film composition and the move into theatre

Roja introduced Rahman as a feature-film composer in 1992. Bombay Dreams later moved his work into a stage musical, first in London and then on Broadway. These are different settings for composition: songs and score supporting a filmed story, and music performed within a live theatrical production.
