Empty Sky introduced his album career in 1969. Your Song followed in the next recording phase, helping establish the collaboration’s division of musical and lyrical work for an audience beyond the early sessions.

His official biography also documents classical training and later recognition by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Fans can follow that musical background alongside his stage recordings instead of treating the costumes as the whole story.

Who Believes in Angels?, released in April 2025, is a shared studio album with Brandi Carlile. The ten-song project was recorded at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles in late 2023, with Andrew Watt producing and writing alongside John, Carlile and Bernie Taupin.

The title song pairs Carlile's lyrics with John's melody, while other tracks emerged through different combinations of the collaborators. This is a useful later-career example of the distinction between ending regular touring and ending recording work: the album was developed after the farewell-tour chapter.

John's official history dates the composition of Your Song to October 1969 and the studio recording to January 1970. The familiar release therefore followed a sequence of writing, demo and arranged-session stages, rather than appearing fully formed on one date.

Paul Buckmaster arranged the recording, with musicians contributing guitars, bass, drums and harp around John's piano and voice. Later releases have included the piano demo and live performances. Checking those credits and version labels reveals why recordings of the same composition can sound substantially different.
