Life & work
The person behind the work.
Biography and career records reviewed 23 Oct 2026.
Elvis Presley’s recording career drew on country, blues and gospel. The Rock Hall traces his early Sun Records work to That’s All Right, followed by records that brought those influences into a larger popular-music audience.
Heartbreak Hotel and Love Me Tender belong to his 1956 breakthrough period. Later recordings such as Suspicious Minds and Burning Love show why the catalogue should be explored across decades rather than treated as one early rock-and-roll moment.
Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, and moved with his family to Memphis in 1948. Graceland, his Memphis home, now presents his life and recording history as a visitor destination and archive. Its institutional channels publish exhibition and legacy updates.
The programme commonly called the '68 Comeback Special was titled Elvis. Its performances were taped in June 1968, during a period when his film work and soundtrack releases had occupied much of his career. The television production belongs to his performance history, rather than being a conventional studio-album session.
In January and February 1969, he recorded at American Sound Studio in Memphis. Graceland's chronology identifies this as his return to recording in the city after years of work in Nashville and Hollywood. The sessions brought him together with Memphis musicians and produced material for two albums.
These dates help separate three often-combined parts of the story: the television comeback, the subsequent studio recordings and the return to regular live appearances. A release carrying a 1968 or 1969 label may document a different setting, so the recording location and format are useful alongside the song title.
