From Marathi acting to Hindi playback

Mangeshkar’s early work included acting as well as singing. With Aayega Aanewala in Mahal, her voice became a defining part of a film performance without requiring her to appear on screen. Her playback recordings served characters and stories, while the songs also became a repertoire listeners could follow independently.

Production and national recognition

Mangeshkar also worked behind the screen as a producer. Gulzar’s Lekin brought that work together with her singing and earned her a National Film Award. Her honours include the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Bharat Ratna.
