Wings formed in 1971 with Linda McCartney and Denny Laine. The group’s recorded history includes Band on the Run and Live and Let Die, offering listeners a separate band identity to explore after the Beatles.

McCartney II provides another contrast. Conceived at his Scottish farm and developed through home recording, it foregrounds electronic experimentation and McCartney’s own instrumental work, including Coming Up, rather than reproducing a conventional touring-band setup.

Band on the Run (Underdubbed Mixes), released in February 2024, presents nine songs without the orchestral overdubs heard in the finished production. The mixes were made by Geoff Emerick, assisted by Pete Swettenham, at AIR Studios on 14 October 1973. They are archival mixes from the original project, not new performances recorded for the anniversary.

Their order follows the tapes found in MPL's archive and differs from the familiar album sequence. Mamunia and No Words come before Jet in this edition. That change is useful for listeners comparing the developing record with the final release: running order and added instrumental layers are separate parts of album construction.

The official description uses underdubbed to explain the removal of later additions. It does not mean an acoustic re-recording or a set of isolated vocals. The musicians' existing performances remain the basis, offering another perspective on Wings alongside McCartney's more self-contained solo recordings.
