History and adaptation

A historical drama uses performance and narrative construction. The film can be discussed alongside its source book without treating every scene as unmediated historical footage.

Recognition for filmmaking

At the 1994 Academy Awards, the film won seven categories, including Best Picture, directing, adapted screenplay and cinematography. These credits recognise the work of several collaborators behind the finished film.

Recognizing the collaborators behind the image

Janusz Kaminski’s predominantly black-and-white photography gives the film its visual identity, but the image is still the product of a staged historical drama. The ASC’s production account makes that distinction useful: choices of lighting and camera placement shape how events are seen. A scene that resembles a historical photograph is not, for that reason, a surviving record of the event. The film and documentary testimony serve different purposes.

American Society of Cinematographers

Steven Zaillian’s adaptation gives names, conversations and practical decisions a continuing place within a story of mass persecution. When watching, pay attention to the relationship between Schindler’s changing actions and the Jewish people whose lives are at stake, including Stern. Treating the film only as the transformation of one industrialist can obscure the people whose knowledge and endurance make that transformation consequential.

Using a drama as a starting point for learning

The film contains sustained depictions of violence and persecution; choosing the setting and time for a viewing matters. For research or education, keep a note of which claims come from the film, which from Keneally’s book and which from a historical source. The performances by Neeson, Kingsley and Fiennes are interpretations of named people, not substitutes for testimony. That distinction allows discussion of the filmmaking while keeping historical inquiry open.
