The film behind the story.

Film credits and release history reviewed 23 Oct 2026.

James Cameron places a fictional romance within the historical sinking of RMS Titanic. Jack and Rose come from different social backgrounds, giving the voyage a personal story alongside the ship’s disaster.

American Film Institute

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet lead the cast. The 1997 film depicts the 1912 voyage; its release year, historical setting and subsequent awards belong to separate timelines.

Fiction within a historical event

The central romance is a dramatic construction. The historical ship and disaster provide the setting, but the film is not a documentary record of every person aboard.

The 1998 Academy Awards

Titanic won eleven Oscars from fourteen nominations. Its awards included Best Picture and directing, with James Cameron recognised for directing and sharing the editing award.

The ship’s spaces make class visible

The romance takes Jack and Rose through spaces arranged by wealth and permission. Watch who may enter a room, who must explain being there and who has an easy route to safety. The disaster changes the practical meaning of those boundaries. This gives the fictional relationship a connection to the ship’s social world without making the lovers historical witnesses whose every action can be checked against a passenger record.

American Film Institute

Cinematographer Russell Carpenter described a progression from graceful movement in the romance to more forceful movement during the sinking, alongside changes in colour and light. These are ways of altering the viewer’s physical relationship to a familiar setting. A room that once seemed spacious can become an obstacle when the orientation, movement and urgency of the scene change.

A historical setting assembled for the screen

The AFI credits identify Peter Lamont’s production design and editing by Conrad Buff, James Cameron and Richard A. Harris. The scale of the production should not obscure these distinct jobs: sets create navigable spaces, photography decides how we see them and editing determines how separate actions unfold together. When using the film to discuss the 1912 disaster, distinguish its invented romance, its recreated environment and the historical claims that need independent evidence.
