How Many Followers Do You Need to Go Live on TikTok?

TikTok publishes the number, and it is 1,000. Its Support Center article on TikTok LIVE lists who can use the feature, and one of the three bullets reads: "Have 1,000 followers to go LIVE (may vary across regions)." The same list requires you to be at least 18. So the short answer is 1,000 followers and 18 years old — with a qualifier TikTok wrote into its own sentence.

That qualifier matters, and so does the fact that followers are not the only gate. TikTok describes LIVE access in more than one help article, in one place without naming any number at all, and the app itself will tell you which requirement your account is failing.

The sentence TikTok publishes

The figure comes from TikTok's Support Center article about TikTok LIVE, under the heading "Who can use LIVE on TikTok?". The full list, quoted exactly:

• "Be at least 18 years old to go LIVE."
• "Be at least 18 years old (or 19 in South Korea) to send or receive Gifts during a LIVE."
• "Have 1,000 followers to go LIVE (may vary across regions)."

Read the third bullet closely. TikTok states 1,000 and immediately qualifies it as regional. The same page adds a second geographic caveat about the feature itself: "LIVE and Gift features aren't currently available everywhere." Both qualifiers are TikTok's own wording, and both are easy to lose when a number is passed along second-hand. What TikTok published is a figure with conditions attached, not a hard universal rule.

Worth noting for anyone hunting for a date: this Support Center article carries no "last updated" stamp, unlike TikTok's LIVE Studio help pages, which do. It was read for this page on 10 September 2026.

Where TikTok's second description differs

TikTok documents LIVE access in two places, and they do not read the same. Its LIVE Studio Help Center article Apply for LIVE access, stamped "Updated on Feb 11, 2025", covers the desktop app and splits its guidance by history: "The application process differs depending on your past activity on TikTok." Under the heading "If you are an active LIVE creator on TikTok", it lists five requirements for getting Studio access instantly, quoted exactly:

• "Your TikTok account was created a certain number of days ago."
• "You have gone LIVE for a certain amount of time recently."
• "You have a certain number of followers."
• "Your LIVE access has not been suspended recently."
• "No current access suspension or revocation."

Not one of those carries a number. Followers are a single item out of five, described only as "a certain number of followers", and the section closes: "The requirements vary by country or region and are subject to change without notice." That is the same company, describing the same feature, declining to name the figure its own Support Center gives.

The scope is worth stating plainly, because it is easy to over-read. That five-item list is TikTok's instant-access rule inside LIVE Studio for accounts that already go LIVE — which is why one row asks whether you "have gone LIVE for a certain amount of time recently". It is not the checklist a 200-follower account faces. What it does establish is that even where TikTok enumerates its LIVE requirements, it declines to quantify them, and that suspension history sits among them.

So 1,000 is the published headline figure for LIVE eligibility, flagged as regional by TikTok itself, and it sits in a system where other conditions apply and TikTok declines to publish most of them. Two accounts with identical follower counts can genuinely see different screens.

How to make TikTok show you your own requirements

TikTok will name the requirements you personally have not met, and its LIVE Studio FAQ, updated 19 August 2026, gives the steps for the phone app:

1. Open TikTok and tap + at the bottom of the screen.
2. Swipe left to the LIVE section, then tap Get access to go LIVE.
3. If you qualify, tap Get access. If you do not, TikTok says "the unmet requirements will be displayed in gray at the top, and you can reapply after fulfilling them".

On a computer the flow is the same inside LIVE Studio: log in, and "you'll see the unmet requirements displayed in gray at the top". Either way, that gray text is the only answer that knows your country, your account and today's rules — TikTok says on the same page that the access requirements can differ by country or region.

Read what it lists. If the unmet item is account age or a suspension, no amount of follower growth will change the screen. If followers are the only item shown, then growth is the whole job, and how to get more TikTok followers covers what actually moves that number.

The requirement with no regional asterisk: you must be 18

The age rule is the one TikTok states without hedging. Its Help Center article on age requirements for TikTok LIVE says: "You must be aged 18 or older to go LIVE. To help us ensure that LIVE creators meet our minimum age requirements, we may ask you to confirm your age before you go LIVE."

TikTok then lists four outcomes of an age check. "If we confirm you're over 18, you're eligible to go LIVE." "If we can't confirm your age, you won't be able to go LIVE." "If we confirm that you're under 18, you won't be able to access LIVE or other features on TikTok where you don't meet the minimum age requirement." And the harshest: "If we confirm you're under 13, your account will be removed for being below TikTok's minimum age."

If you are asked to confirm, TikTok lists four methods and says which one you see depends on your location: ID and selfies, selfie with ID through Incode, credit card authorization, and facial age estimation. For that last one TikTok requires a live capture: "A selfie taken in real-time. You can't upload an existing selfie from your photo album." Not everyone is asked — TikTok notes it "may not ask you to confirm your age, depending on factors such as your location or if you've previously done so."

Below 18, the follower question is moot. No follower count substitutes for the age requirement, and TikTok's Gifts rules are stricter again in one market, requiring 19 in South Korea.

The route that names no follower count at all

TikTok documents a second path for people who do not already stream on TikTok. Under the heading "If you are a streamer on other platforms", the LIVE Studio Help Center says "You'll be redirected to the LIVE access application page if you're not an active creator on TikTok", and that "You can still apply for LIVE access by submitting an application form that provides information on your channel on another platform."

What matters here is what TikTok does and does not say. It describes the route in terms of your channel elsewhere — Twitch or YouTube, say, though TikTok names no platform — and it names no follower count in describing it. It does not say the 1,000-follower requirement is waived for applicants, so treat this as a documented alternative route rather than a proven way around the number. TikTok sets expectations on timing instead: "It might take days to review, and you'll receive a notice on the TikTok app when approved."

If you already stream elsewhere and you are stuck under 1,000, this application is worth trying.

Keeping access once you have it

This is the one hard number TikTok publishes on the topic. The LIVE Studio FAQ explains why access disappears: "Your access may have been revoked if your trial expired." Then the condition: "If you're using a trial, make sure to go LIVE for at least 25 minutes, twice during your first week. If you don't meet these requirements, your access will be revoked."

Twenty-five minutes, twice, in the first week. It is the most concrete published requirement in this whole topic, and it is about behavior rather than audience size. If your LIVE access vanished shortly after you got it, check this before assuming you lost followers.

Suspensions are a separate gate. TikTok says you "can only appeal a violation once", that after submitting an appeal "you should receive the result within 24 hours", and that there are three possible outcomes: the ban lifted, the account remaining banned, or "an adjustment to your account ban period". Two of the five LIVE Studio criteria are about suspensions, so a violation history can block access at any follower count.

"Can I go live with 100, 200 or 500 followers?"

All three are below TikTok's published 1,000, so against the figure TikTok states, the answer is no. TikTok has reserved the right for your region's threshold to differ, and it does not publish what any regional threshold is, so nobody outside TikTok can tell you whether 500 clears the bar where you live. The app can.

What is certain is the structure of the problem. If you are under 18, or your account carries a recent LIVE suspension, then 100, 500 and 5,000 followers all produce the same result, because followers are one requirement among several. If your account is clean and you are over 18, the follower item may well be the only one in play — and if the gray text confirms that, the job is straightforward account growth, not a workaround.

Can buying followers unlock LIVE?

We are not going to tell you it does. TikTok publishes 1,000 as a headline figure and then qualifies it regionally, so no seller can honestly promise that a given package crosses your threshold. Age is a separate gate that no purchase touches, and a suspension or revocation on the account blocks LIVE regardless of audience size. Followers are one input into a decision TikTok makes on its own terms and will not fully describe.

There is also a question nobody outside TikTok can answer: whether followers acquired that way count toward the requirement at all. TikTok does not say, and we have not tested it. The 1,000 figure dates to at least 2022 — the age rule around it changed

The threshold has been reported at 1,000 for years, which is part of why it is repeated so confidently. Covering TikTok's decision to raise the livestreaming age, CBS News wrote on 19 October 2022: "Currently, any user over the age of 16 with at least 1,000 followers is able to host a TikTok livestream, or LIVE." The same article reported that "TikTok will increase the minimum age requirement for livestreaming from 16 to 18 beginning on Nov. 23".

Note which half moved. Nearly four years later, TikTok's Support Center gave 1,000 followers when this page was read on 10 September 2026, while the age in that 2022 sentence is out of date. If you see a 16-year-old minimum quoted anywhere, it predates TikTok's November 2022 change — a decent reason to treat any unsourced number on this topic, including the follower one, as something to check in the app.

The short version

1. TikTok publishes 1,000 followers to go LIVE, with its own qualifier "may vary across regions".
2. You must be 18 or older. Nothing substitutes for that, and Gifts require 19 in South Korea.
3. Open the LIVE tab and tap "Get access to go LIVE". Read the gray text listing what you have not met.
4. If followers are the only unmet item, the route is ordinary growth — there is no shortcut that satisfies the rest.
5. If the unmet item is not followers, stop chasing followers. For LIVE Studio access, TikTok's criteria for existing LIVE creators also weigh account age, recent streaming time and suspension history.
6. If you stream on another platform, TikTok documents an application route that names no follower count.
7. Once you have trial access, go LIVE for at least 25 minutes, twice in your first week, or you lose it.
8. Treat any number quoted without a TikTok source as unverified. TikTok says the requirements can change without notice.
