Her move to Atlantic in 1967 led to recordings including Respect and A Natural Woman. Respect reworked an Otis Redding song into a performance closely associated with Franklin’s own musical and cultural identity.

In 1987 she became the first woman inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That distinction sits alongside a long catalogue whose recordings, rather than a single genre label, show the breadth of her career.

Young, Gifted and Black, released in January 1972, presents Franklin as a writer as well as an interpreter. Rhino identifies Day Dreaming and Rock Steady as her compositions. The album also includes her readings of songs associated with Nina Simone, the Beatles and Elton John, so the songwriter credits vary from track to track.

Donny Hathaway, Billy Preston, Bernard Purdie and Dr. John appear among its musicians. Following those credits provides another way to understand the record: Franklin’s voice and piano sit within a collaborative band setting, and the original songs are an essential part of the programme, not an appendix to the covers.

Amazing Grace was recorded at Los Angeles’s New Temple Missionary Baptist Church on 13 and 14 January 1972. The sessions connect her established gospel background with a documented live performance, including the Southern California Community Choir and Reverend James Cleveland.

The Complete Recordings preserves material from both nights, including introductions and remarks. Rhino’s 2019 four-LP edition contains more than twice the original release’s number of tracks. A complete-session edition and the original album therefore offer different listening programmes, even though both draw on the same January performances.
