Life & work

The film behind the story.

Film credits and release history reviewed 23 Oct 2026.

Interlocking criminal encounters move through Los Angeles as hitmen, a boxer and other figures cross paths. Quentin Tarantino’s film connects those stories through shifts in sequence, extended conversation and sudden violence.

Miramax

John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman and Bruce Willis are among the cast. Sally Menke edited the film, whose Cannes premiere and Palme d’Or belong to 1994.

Stories that intersect

The separate situations in the synopsis are connected through recurring people and consequences. Their order of presentation is part of the film’s construction.

Miramax

Festival and screenplay recognition

Cannes awarded Pulp Fiction the Palme d’Or in 1994. The following year, the Academy recognised Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary with the original-screenplay Oscar, marking a separate stage in its reception.

Separate chronology from the order of telling

The film’s chapters do not ask the audience to experience every event in chronological order. On a first viewing, track which characters recur and which conversations are interrupted or resumed. On a second, compare the order of events with the order in which information is supplied. A scene can gain tension, comedy or a different moral emphasis because the viewer already knows something that its characters do not.

Sally Menke’s editing is central to the rhythm of those encounters. The BFI’s account of her collaboration with Tarantino describes an editor whose work encompasses performance and tone, not just the mechanics of rearranging a story. Watch where a conversation is allowed to continue after its apparent practical purpose has ended, and how an abrupt change of tempo makes violence feel disruptive rather than routine.

The Los Angeles world around the dialogue

The credited team includes production designer David Wasco and music supervisor Karyn Rachtman. Their contributions help distinguish the film’s different interiors and the sounds associated with them. The extended conversations, songs and recognizable objects create a world beyond the immediate criminal transactions. This is useful context when discussing influence: copying a character’s clothes or a famous line reproduces a surface detail, while the original scene’s timing and relationships do much of the work.
