Life & work

The writer behind the work.

Biography and career records reviewed 23 Oct 2026.

Shakespeare worked in two worlds: the family and property he kept in Stratford-upon-Avon, and the commercial theatres of London. He wrote for the stage while also acting and holding a stake in the company that became the King’s Men.

His baptism on 26 April 1564 is documented, but the traditional 23 April birthday is not. Surviving records leave substantial gaps in his private life.

The play in different editions

Romeo and Juliet’s 1597 quarto is much shorter than the 1599 edition. Comparing them reveals why the history of a play includes more than one printed text.

Reading the historical record

Documentary records establish parts of Shakespeare’s career; they leave his exact birthday and other biographical questions unanswered.

Hamlet: listen for the difference between thought and action

Hamlet offers a useful route into Shakespeare’s dramatic method. The prince has a demand for revenge, but uncertainty surrounds the ghost, his mother’s knowledge and his own responses. A plot summary can identify the deaths; it cannot reproduce the changing pressure of a speech addressed to an audience, another character or the speaker himself. Read a soliloquy alongside the scene that follows it and ask whether Hamlet’s actions support the certainty of his words.

The Folger edition provides a complete text, scene summaries, language notes and an account of its editorial choices. For a first reading, use the synopsis after a scene rather than replacing the scene with it. For a performance comparison, choose the same passage in two productions: a pause, a gesture or a different addressee can change the force of the language without changing the printed words. This is a reading approach, not a claim that one interpretation settles the play’s questions.

Choose a text that explains its decisions

Romeo and Juliet is a particularly clear example of why editions matter. The early quartos differ, so a modern editor must decide which readings to print and which variants to explain. An annotated edition that identifies its source texts is more useful for comparison than a quotation page with no edition or scene reference. When sharing a passage, retain the act, scene and edition; line numbering may differ between versions.
