Facebook keeps every photo you upload until you remove it yourself. Below is how to delete a single photo, a whole album, or a batch of photos at once — on both the mobile app and desktop — plus what actually happens to a photo after you delete it, and whether you can get it back.

Before you start: what deleting actually does

  • Deleting a photo removes it from your profile permanently, along with all of its likes, comments, and tags.
  • It does not touch your saved logins, your other posts, or your messages — only that image.
  • You can only delete photos you uploaded. If someone else posted a photo of you, you can untag yourself or report it, but you cannot delete their copy.
  • Most deletions now pass through Facebook's Trash first, where items sit for 30 days before they are gone for good (see the recovery section below).

Delete a single photo

On the mobile app (iOS and Android)

  1. Open the Facebook app and tap through to your own profile.
  2. Tap Photos, then the Your photos tab (your version may label this "Uploads").
  3. Tap the photo to open it full-screen.
  4. Tap the three-dot menu () at the top right.
  5. Tap Delete photo (some versions say Move to trash).
  6. Confirm on the pop-up.

The steps are the same on iPhone and Android; only the exact button label or its position may differ slightly by app version.

On desktop (facebook.com)

  1. Go to facebook.com, sign in, and open your profile.
  2. Click Photos, then Your Photos.
  3. Click the photo to open it.
  4. Click the three-dot Options menu in the top-right corner of the photo.
  5. Choose Move to Trash or Delete Photo.
  6. Click to confirm.

Delete an entire album

Deleting a custom album removes every photo inside it in one action. Note that Facebook's system albums — Profile Pictures, Cover Photos, Timeline Photos, and Mobile Uploads — cannot be deleted as a whole; you can only remove the individual photos within them.

Mobile: Profile → PhotosAlbums tab → open the album → tap Delete Album → confirm.

Desktop: Profile → PhotosAlbums → open the album → click the three-dot / settings icon → Delete Album → confirm.

Delete multiple photos at once (Activity Log)

Activity Log lets you review and remove many items in one place, which is faster than opening photos one by one.

  1. Mobile: tap the menu () → Settings & PrivacyActivity Log. Use Manage Activity (or Manage posts) to select several items, then choose Move to trash.
  2. Desktop: click your profile photo (top right) → Settings & PrivacyActivity Log. In the left-hand filter panel choose Photos and videos, tick the items you want, then select Move to trash or Delete.

Activity Log's layout and wording change fairly often. If the labels don't match exactly, look for a filter list on the left and a three-dot menu beside each item.

Can you recover deleted photos?

Yes — usually for a limited window. When you delete a photo, it typically moves to Trash and stays there for 30 days. To restore it: open Activity LogTrash → select the photo → Restore. After 30 days, items in Trash are deleted automatically.

Once a photo is permanently deleted — the 30 days have passed, or you manually emptied the Trash — there is no user-facing way to get it back. Facebook may keep backup copies within its own systems for a short period, but you cannot restore them yourself. If a photo matters to you, download a copy first via Settings & Privacy → Settings → Download your information, then choose Posts / Photos.

Frequently asked questions

Does deleting a Facebook photo also remove it from Messenger?

No. Photos you sent inside Messenger chats are stored separately from your profile photos. Deleting a profile or album photo does not remove copies you shared in conversations — you'd have to delete those inside the chat itself.

I deleted a photo but my friends can still see it. Why?

Two common reasons: the photo may still be in your Trash (where it's visible only to you for 30 days), or someone else shared or re-uploaded their own copy, which your deletion doesn't affect. Caching can also make an image linger briefly after deletion — refresh the page or wait a short while.

Can I delete my profile or cover photo without adding a new one?

Yes. Deleting removes it, and your profile will show a default silhouette (or a blank cover) until you add a replacement. Keep in mind you're deleting that image from the album entirely, not just removing it from the profile slot.
