The beginning of Apu’s story

The film introduces Apu as a child within a family. Its place at the beginning of a trilogy does not remove the importance of Durga and the other people around him.

A literary adaptation and musical score

Ray adapted Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s novel for the screen. Ravi Shankar composed the score, adding another artistic voice to the observation of rural Bengali life.

Childhood discovery and household survival

Apu and Durga can experience the same environment as a place of discovery that their mother experiences as a demanding household to sustain. Watch how the film moves between those perspectives without asking one to cancel the other. The children’s curiosity does not remove material hardship, and hardship does not make curiosity unimportant. That balance gives everyday encounters their dramatic force.

Sound helps connect what the children can see with what lies beyond their immediate world. Listen for changes between music, voices and the environment, and notice how a sound can create anticipation before its source is visible. The arrival of something new matters because the film has first given ordinary life enough attention for the difference to register.

Criterion Collection

A first feature made by a team

Ray’s debut was also a collaboration with cinematographer Subrata Mitra, art director Bansi Chandragupta, editor Dulal Dutta and composer Ravi Shankar. Criterion lists a 125-minute Bengali presentation in the 1.37:1 frame. Begin the Apu Trilogy here if you want to follow its chronology, but do not rush through this film as a prologue: Durga, the mother and the older generation have experiences that matter within this story, not only as influences on Apu’s later life.
